If it wasn't for the well-documented PS5 stock situation, it's fair to assume that Sony's current-gen console would be absolutely flying right now. But as it stands, the stock-strangled system is only just starting to dominate the gaming market, close to two years after its initial launch.
Stock improvements in the US have allowed the PS5 to finally top the charts in August 2022, following a string of recent defeats to the evergreen Nintendo Switch. Sony's hefty device was the best-selling hardware of the month, both in terms of units and dollar sales (as per the ultra informative Mat Piscatella).
As for games, Madden NFL 23 topped the dollar sales charts for August, followed by Saints Row, and then Marvel's Spider-Man — which saw a huge boost thanks to its release on PC. Overall, though, the industry's still down year-on-year in terms of overall spend, but only by 5 per cent.

Interesting.
I mean most of us here knew PS5 could have run away with it over the past two years if there was enough stock, but it feels like this generation as been caught in an extended prologue and it's just about to get going.
Very well deserved, in my opinion. I expect the switch to beat MS and Sony in September with Splatoon 3 out.
Is Horizon 2 bundled in the US, too?
@SinfulDestroyer well, sales =/= quality
It's been proven one too many times
The stock shortages have definitely benefited Microsoft. Xbox isn't as far behind as it would have been.
@SinfulDestroyer it's not a bad game if you down for some dumb fun which is what most people look for.
@SinfulDestroyer
I didn’t get past the character creator, which they foolishly gave away for free.
@TheCollector316 absolutely. We'll never know how the generation would have gone had the ps5 been readily available after the first three months or so.
@Bamila I have seen quite a few play through and a lot of bugs and it looks really really dated.
It's gonna be super fascinating to see what these overall numbers look like in 2024/5 after hopefully all these shortages are a thing of the past. Will PS5 numbers continue to drastically improve back to like it should have without shortages, will Series X/S overall close the gap on PS5 maybe and what happens to the Switch next console while their fans hoping it doesn't end up Gamecube WiiU all over again. Ultimately I don't care who is the market leader on top or not but it is sort of nice knowing the console you play on is doing well. It's all about the quality triple AAA games than actual numbers for me
It's about the games. Always.
Always. People need to understand that.
Not by having a better renting service...
I don't play sports games so it baffles me when people run out to by the same game every year I figured at this point they'd have season pass/battle passes and just update.
Push staff please start using acronym meaning formats like: NPD (meaning) in your articles, sometimes I find it hard to read due this acronyms I don't know nor have the time to search. Thank you in advance
Not surprised, great console with tons of games of every type. Safest bet.
@pharos_haven
That community thinks very very different from us
Yeah this chip situation jacked everything up. The main culprit....COVID. I'm sure the PS4 would have sold more than 117m had COVID not been a factor. Still great sales for the PS5.
@Bamila why do y’all always use that “dumb fun” excuse as a euphemism for just saying it’s something to distract and waste your time despite how bad it is . watching paint dry could be dumb fun with a couple of friends 💀
@SinfulDestroyer because people still wanted to give it a chance ? it’s dead now . nobody cares about that trash anymore
@naruball what’s quality on the switch ? everything’s a downgrade on it
As long as they get stock every week I'd expect playstation to be top every month.
Christmas is going to be massive for them
@uptownsoul I see. Thanks!
@nomither6 I hear good things about Splatoon 3. Haven't played anything on it apart from Zelda
@CapGod you really are the capgod 😆
@Cherip-the-Ripper
Cap as in, Capcom. The best third part publisher everyone should take notes from.
I'm not capping. Since the first console, games is what have always mattered the most.
N.i.c.e. ps5 is the best. 👑.word up son
Bu-bu-but i thought PS5 stock issues are just an excuse for low demand?
@Beerheadgamer82
I'd like it to get back to how it was in the 360/PS3/Wii era where all 3 brands were highly successful. Xbox really struggled last gen and while I think the Series X is better thought out and designed piece of hardware, the first party situation needs to get sorted out if Xbox is going to have any hope to get back to where the brand was during its second generation.
The silent seller here has been GT7. This game was released back in March, and it's been quietly and consistently showing up in best-selling lists since then. Which I'm quite glad, since it's been dominating my gaming time this year.
Sheesh, who’s still buying Minecraft and Skyrim?
Sony and Microsoft had the same problem when it came to the new systems. There was a shortage for the motherboard that both system needed. I been looking for both systems but everywhere I look is out of stock. So how's Microsoft better when I can't find the new Xbox
